CLAIRE

Morning sun soaks through the windows as I walk into the living room. This morning, I have the time to study it. To walk around and check the picture frame, and read the book’s name, and try to use the decoration as a puzzle. Every piece can tell me a little about Neil. About who he is, and what he believes in. I could check his kitchen drawers and decide if he’s a coffee or tea person. If he has seasonings, if he cooks. What snacks he eats. It’s fascinating to piece a person together using the things you find at their place. Kind of Sherlock-y.

But I won’t do that. When I walk into the bathroom to wash my mouth and face, I avoid looking at anything else. When I pass the living room to reach the kitchen and fetch a glass of water, my gaze is fastened on the task at hand, dodging every other detail in the space.

I’m not trying to understand Neil. Don’t want to see the details of his personality. I don’t need to.

Because I’m leaving. And we’re not seeing each other again.

A strange sensation fills the pit of my stomach. It’s the same since I woke up and made this decision. Neil’s arm draped over my waist, and, for a minute, in that slumber of semi-awareness, I soaked in his warmth. In his affection. He pulled me even closer, snuggling me into his chest, his nose against the back of my ear. Neil released a content sigh as I let him hug me. As I felt his breath against my skin, a purr vibrating from within his chest.

I blame drowsiness, but I let myself wonder at that moment. Neil wants me. He made it very clear throughout the night we spent together. From even before our lips touched, to the moment we laid down to sleep after we showered and ate something. He allowed himself into a one-night stand because he wants to convince me to stay.

And what if I did?

Neil’s body fits mine perfectly. Sex is the best I’ve ever had. He’s intense, focused on giving me all the pleasure I could wish for. His attention to my every motion makes it clear he’s carefully learning what I like, and how I like it. He’s funny, and he listens to everything I have to say, and he’s so sweet.

In the beginning, everything feels so right. The wonder of meeting someone new. The infallible attraction. How good it feels to be admired... But it doesn’t last, does it?

Soon enough, the new person sees your flaws. Being a normal human being with flaws is unacceptable for some. I had a boyfriend once who despised knowing I had periods. He ordered me to hide my tampons and such. Because of a freaking period. As if that wasn’t the absolute norm for women in fertile age.

But that boyfriend did so much more. My doubts were used against me. He convinced me of how he was the best part of my life.
